The Kizhi museum is the largest open air museum of Russia located on Kizhi Island in Lake Onega, 68 km from Petrozavodsk, the capital of Karelia, and 425 km from Saint Petersburg. The Kizhi museum is one of the ten main visual symbols of Russia. It is the unique museum of peasant culture and wooden architecture of the Russian North. In 1990 the Kizhi Architectural Ensemble was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with the Moscow Kremlin and the historical center of Saint Petersburg.

In 2014 the Kizhi museum was ranked top ten Russian museums according to customer reviews of the world's largest travel portal TripAdvisor. In 2015 authoritative British newspaper The Telegraph included the Church of the Transfiguration in the list of the most beautiful churches of the world.

The architectural ensemble of the museum includes the unsurpassed masterpieces of Russian wooden architecture: the Church of the Transfiguration (1714), the Church of the Intercession (1764) and the bell tower (late XIX c).
During the tour around Kizhi Island you will see the unique multi-domed churches and their icon decoration, visit a house of a Zaonezhie farmer, listen to bell ringing at the Archangel Michael Chapel and see the Church of the Lazarus Resurrection, the oldest church in Russia, which was revered as an Orthodox shrine.
They have painstakingly reconstructed the economic way of life and the cultural world of the Russian North peasants of the XIX c. on the island.
In addition to the tour around the main exposition, visitors of the museum can go in for a variety of additional programs. If you are curious to uncover the secrets of carpentry or folk shipbuilding, to take part in ancient rites or to listen to lingering northern songs – the island of Kizhi is waiting for you!
Those who admire the picturesque northern nature and beautiful panoramic views can go on a horse, cycling and water tour around the preserved island.
The island of Kizhi is available for visiting all year round.
In summer one can get to Kizhi Island by cruise ships from Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara and Perm as well as by hydrofoils from Petrozavodsk. In winter one can get to Kizhi Island by hovercrafts, snowmobiles, buses, dog sleds and helicopters from Petrozavodsk.
A visit to Kizhi Island is part of the compulsory travel program around the North West of Russia. Your tour operator will consult you on the route and pick up the program including visiting Kizhi Island from any city of Russia. The Kizhi museum offers a guide service in 8 languages.
